From The Big Leagues to Mini Golf: Best Golf Courses in Abilene, TX

Abilene doesn't usually come up in conversations about great golf cities, but it probably should. Between a course designed by a Masters champion and some of the best mini golf spots in West Texas, there's something for every skill level and every kind of outing. Here's a look at the best golf courses in Abilene, TX, all within about 15 minutes of Lexington Court Apartments.

Championship and Full-Size Courses

Abilene has three standout courses worth knowing about, whether you're looking for a public course or a full country club experience.

Live Oak Golf Club

Live Oak Golf Club (3721 National Drive), formerly known as Diamondback National, is the premier public course in the area. It was designed by 1971 Masters champion Charles Coody, who still lives in Abilene. The 18-hole, par 71 layout has a Hill Country feel that surprises most people who associate West Texas with flat, open terrain. Live Oak also has a 12-acre practice facility with a driving range, a 10,000-square-foot putting green, and a pitching green with two sand bunkers, so there's plenty of room to work on every part of your game. The course is roughly 10 minutes from Lexington Court.

Maxwell Municipal Golf Course

Maxwell Municipal Golf Course (1002 S. 32nd St.) has been an Abilene staple since 1934. Located south of downtown near I-20, Maxwell is a public 18-hole course with a layout that works for all skill levels. It recently reopened under new management with Lonestar Golf Course Management, and improvements are already underway, including an upgraded driving range with new target greens where you can hit off grass or mats. It's about 10 minutes from Lexington Court.

Abilene Country Club

For golfers who want a private membership experience, Abilene Country Club has been around since 1921. The club offers 36 holes across two championship courses, including the South Course, which was ranked among the best in Texas by the Dallas Morning News and hosted PGA and Senior PGA Tour events from 1979 to 1990. Beyond golf, members have access to tennis, swimming, dining, and a full calendar of social events. It's about 12 minutes from Lexington Court.

Driving Ranges and Practice Facilities

Both Live Oak and Maxwell have driving ranges on-site, so you can work on your swing before or after a round. But if you want something more low-key, or you're looking for a quick round without committing to a full 18, Willow Creek Golf Center (1166 Ben Richey Drive) is worth knowing about. Willow Creek is the only par-3 course in the Big Country area, with 9 holes spread across 1,163 yards. It's a great spot for beginners learning the game or experienced players looking to sharpen their short game after work. The facility is lighted for nighttime play, so you're not limited to daylight hours. There's also an on-site driving range and an easygoing sports bar called Mulligans. Willow Creek is about 12 minutes from Lexington Court Apartments.

Mini Golf and Fun for Everyone

Abilene also has a surprisingly good mini golf scene, whether you're planning a family outing or looking for somewhere to putt with a drink in hand. Here are the spots to know if you're searching for mini golf in Abilene, TX.

Play Faire Park (2300 N. 2nd St.) has been open since 1947, making it the oldest continuously running mini golf course in Texas. It has two 18-hole courses in an outdoor setting with live music, string lights, and a laid-back atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. It's a go-to for families, date nights, and community events. About 10 minutes from Lexington Court.

PrimeTime Family Entertainment Center (4541 Loop 322) is a full-scale entertainment hub with two 18-hole mini golf courses featuring waterfalls, fountains, and rocky landscaping. Beyond mini golf, PrimeTime has bowling, go-karts, laser tag, bumper cars, an arcade, escape rooms, and a toddler play area called CurioCity. If you're planning a birthday party or a rainy-day outing, this is the spot. About 10 minutes from Lexington Court.

Glo-N-One Mini Golf is an indoor glow-in-the-dark course inside the Mall of Abilene (4310 Buffalo Gap Rd.). Admission includes two rounds of play, and it's a good option year-round, especially when summer heat makes outdoor mini golf less appealing. About 15 minutes from Lexington Court.

The Lucky Shot Bar and Arcade (201 S. Danville Drive) puts a nightlife spin on mini golf. Built on the site of Abilene's old Putt-Putt course, Lucky Shot features three 18-hole courses, a full bar with a self-pour tap wall, classic arcade games, batting cages, and 22 TVs. It's the perfect spot for an evening out with friends and just 12 minutes from Lexington Court.
